RJ-11 cable supplied with router has reversed polarity - (not correct) possible ? Is cable or the website wrong ?

Tested with a multimeter - continuity. Proper - reversed polarity acoording to this. http://hms-electronics.com/BrightSign/data_sheets/ctsled.htm (bottom of the page). Clips are ordered as shown, one next to another. Proper polarity means that going from left to right the matching pairs will be on the same order.

The website is right. With the hook facing down on both connectors, the colors should match. For an ADSL modem, a cable made the way you describe would probably still work. Give it a try, it can't hurt anything. But have another modular phone cable handy just in case the funny one doesn't work.
