Translating into algebra, we get the equation

6x + 5 = 3(x + 1) - 7. Simplifying,

6x + 5 = 3x - 4

3x = - 9

x = - 3

... but i keep getting the wrong answer...which is the MAIN reason you MUST SHOW YOUR WORK !!

let x = an unknown number

model the given informaiton:

6x + 5 = 3(x + 1) - 7

solve the equation in one unknown...distribute, collect like terms, solve, check...
6x + 5 = 3x + 3 - 7
3x = 3 - 7 - 5 = - 9
x = - 3

SHOW YOUR WORK !!

check the answer...do something !!

Unknown anything is x.

Multiply by 6 and add 5.

6x + 5

2nd condition

3 times the number + 1

3(x+1)

Earlier result is 7 less than this.

so, 6x+5 = 3(x+1) - 7

or, 6x + 5 = 3x + 3 - 7

or, 6x - 3x = 3-7-5

or, 3x = -9

or, x = -3
