Carpet, all you need is a vacuum cleaner .
With hardwood floors you have to be careful of skid mark/scratches and you have to have it varnish every so often (that is if you have real wood floors and not fake ones).

I like both. But I like carpets a lot because they make the house look cosy and warm...
