問以下英文句子意思?

2015-04-11 9:53 pm
If our precious arts are left unattended, they will dwindle away, leaving behind nothing but regrets someday.

以上句子是不是表達若我們不理會寶貴的藝術文化,它們便會消失,不會留下甚麼。
但為何最尾說regrets someday?

Art是死物,也會後悔?

麻煩解答及解釋以上用了甚麼的 grammar。

✔ 最佳答案
to leave regrets behind / leave behind regrets = (no more regrets) 不再有遺憾

Therefore, the meaning of the sentence is wrong because of the wrong choice of verb phrase.

You have the correct thinking in asking why .. Art是死物,也會後悔?
The correct meaning in Chinese should be 讓我們感到遺憾. (留下遺憾 seems a Chinese expression)

"nothing but" ~ "only"

Rewriting the sentence:
If our precious arts are left unattended, they will dwindle away, making us feel nothing but regrets someday.

"making us feel nothing but regrets someday" is a participle phrase modifying the main clause "they will dwindle away". (their dwindling away makes us feel regrets)

Art是死物,也會後悔?

你說得對,死物不會後悔,也不會留下遺憾。

給我們留下遺憾 seems to be a better expression in Chinese.

BUT, I am not sure "leaving us nothing but regrets" is an idiomatic English expression.

"leaving us nothing but regrets someday" (confusing, they will leave ... in the future)

"making us feel nothing but regrets someday" (Okay, we will feel ... in the future) someday

IF OUR PRECIOUS ARTS ARE LEFT UNATTENDED, THEY WILL DWINDLE AWAY, LEAVING BEHIND NOTHING BUT REGRET SOMEDAY.
=LEAVING----participle present used adjectivally;qualifying" art."

nothing but regret
=regret (for us)
=regret
=I regret that I lost my attention on " art."
Hence regret for us, not for "art".

nothing but=只有
I read nothing but a comic book. 我只看了一本漫畫書。

因此全句解:
若我們不理會寶貴的藝術文化, 它們將會漸漸減少/消失, 有朝一日只會留下遺憾。

Grammar:

- 第一用了passive voice,

句式: sth./sb. + is/am/are/was/were + past participle (by...) eg. John was praised by his teacher.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 第二用了if-clause 的 type 1

If clause 用 present tense, main clause 用 future tense

句式: If...... , ......will....... or .....will.......if..............

eg. If you eat too much, you will be fat.
You will be fat if you eat too much.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 第三用了verb-ing modifier,

句式: S V O , v + ing
If our precious arts are left unattended, they will dwindle away, leaving behind nothing but regrets someday.
leaving 係形容comma 前一句句子, 即藝術漸漸消失, 我們便會遺憾.
