Always call the police when you are involved in an accident. Always, always, always, always. Am I making my point?
For all you know, the guy who hit you got YOUR license plate number and is giving it to the cops right now from his hospital bed. He is in the hospital because of the searing, blinding pain in his back and neck caused when some maniacal driver (that's you bud) smashed into his car and fled the scene.
You see in a lawsuit, if a driver leaves the scene of an accident they lose. It's almost an automatic thing. This is to say nothing of the charges the driver has to face for leaving the scene of an accident. And who is to say that you didn't leave the scene of the accident? No witnesses and you certainly did not call the police, did you?
Relax. Call your insurance on Monday. You'll be fine.
Ignore Octep, he doesn't understand how the system works. You'll be fine. Call your insurance guy on Monday, tell him what you told us, and you're good to go.
You don't need the guy's plate number, you have his other information. People can get new plate numbers every week if they want (not that anyone would, but it's legal), but they can't change their name and policy number that quickly. Insurance companies don't care about plate numbers.
You had the stop sign and the other guy didn't, so there won't be much dispute as to who was responsible. The other guy can't accuse you of leaving the scene, because he got your name and address and you got his. The damage was obviously really minor if you were both able to drive away, and nobody was injured, so there was no need for the cops to show up. If your insurance company needs you to get a police report, and they might, you can still do it a few days after the accident. It's no big deal.
