I want to start doing acting classes, is 19 too old to get into acting?

Hi, I've wanted to start taking acting lessons for a while now but not really known where to start. I live in Norwich and there we have the Norwich Theatre Royal, would it be best to start on one of their beginner courses? If I enjoy it and am good at it, I want to go further in acting and I think I would do well at professional acting. I am 6'6 and I think that my height would help me stand out in auditions.

I was thinking about once I have gotten more experience in acting that I would either move to London or LA and do acting lessons at a well respected acting school/group where I can gain experience and then do some auditions and see if I could get a part in something. Moving to another country would not be a problem for me. I was also thinking about applying for TV commercials to get my face around and gain some more experience as well. Would this be a good idea to get myself into acting? Any advice would mean a lot to me, thank you!

The flaw in your plan is that in the UK without an agent, you can't get auditions for anything professional - even adverts. And agents won't accept you unless you're a graduate of a top drama school.

If you have no prior training and experience, it would be at least another seven years of very hard work before you could realistically expect to even get an audition for anything, and that's only if you have huge talent.

In the UK the only way to get into acting as a professional is by getting into a top drama school, like RADA, Central, Guildhall, etc, and graduating after three years.

To get into a drama school you'd need an excellent grade A Level Drama or Btec, several years of training at a basic level at a good acting school, good singing and dance abilities, a lot of stage experience (and ordinary school stuff doesn't count at all) as well as huge talent. Each of the drama schools gets about 5,000 people auditioning for only 24 to 30 places, every year. It’s also very expensive – the fees alone are at least £27,000, and on top of that you have to pay all your own rent and living costs.

Train for a good ordinary job as well, one you can work free-lance, as you’ll need it. Almost all actors have to work an ordinary job alongside acting just to pay their bills, as the best you’re ever likely to get is about 2 or 3 weeks' paid acting work a year - that's the average.

If you really want to try, knowing how hard it's going to be, get into a good acting school in your free time and start learning. If you progress from basic classes to intermediate and then to advanced within a few years, maybe you have some talent and could take it further.

If you join a good community theatre and you always get leading roles, again you can assume that you have talent.
After that, apply to the drama schools.

After you graduate, you might be able to get an agent, who might be able to find you some auditions, and if you're really good, and really lucky, you might get the occasional job.

But go into this with your eyes open. It's a really hard career to get into.

Good luck!

It's never too old to perform anything.
