I am 19, Is it too late to start a career in acting? Where to start?

I've been wanting to do acting for a while now but never knew how to get started. I remember doing acting classes when I was about 10 for a few months but my parents just stopped taking me although I remember enjoying it a lot. I haven't taken any lessons since apart from doing drama in school and I want to get involved with acting but don't know where to start or what to do. All actors have agents and the actors have loads of experience in acting but where do you gain the experience? Should you take up acting lessons, join a theatre group or join an acting school? I live in Norwich, UK and there we have the Theatre Royal, would this be a good place to gain some experience or at a smaller acting group before applying to an acting school/uni? Can anyone help me on making my dream a reality. Thank you!

Also you see all these Hollywood actors and British actors who have been acting since they were young and have gotten parts at very young ages which kicked started their acting careers which makes me wonder is it too late for me to start doing acting lessons and then maybe getting some parts in the future?

It's not too late, but if you have no prior training and experience, it would be at least another seven years of very hard work before you could realistically expect to even get an audition for anything, and that's only if you have huge talent.

In the UK the only way to get into acting as a professional is by getting into a top drama school and graduating after three years.

To get into a drama school you'd need an excellent grade A Level Drama or Btec, several years of training at a basic level at a good acting school, good singing and dance abilities, a lot of stage experience (and ordinary school stuff doesn't count at all) as well as huge talent.

Each of the drama schools gets about 5,000 people auditioning for only 24 to 30 places, every year. It’s also very expensive – the fees alone are at least £27,000, and on top of that you have to pay all your own rent and living costs.

Train for a good ordinary job as well, one you can work free-lance, as you’ll need it. Almost all actors have to work an ordinary job alongside acting just to pay their bills, as the best you’re ever likely to get is about 2 or 3 weeks' paid acting work a year - that's the average.

If you really want to try, knowing how hard it's going to be, get into a good acting school in your free time and start learning. If you progress from basic classes to intermediate and then to advanced within a few years, maybe you have some talent and could take it further.

If you join a good community theatre and you always get leading roles, again you can assume that you have talent.
After that, you'd need a high grade A Level in Drama with a few related subjects like English and Psychology, and then apply to the drama schools.

After you graduate, you might be able to get an agent, who might be able to find you some auditions, and if you're really good, and really lucky, you might get the occasional job.
But do go into this with your eyes open - it's an incredibly hard career to get into.

Good luck!

19 is NOT old and by no means TOO OLD. I9 is still quite young actually.

Acting is a hard career path that takes a lot of work and sacrifice, and many never make a living at it, but if it's what you want (or need) to do, then nothing will stop you. If it isn't, that's fine too.

I had more to say, but sucky Yahoo Answers deleter my original response and I am not retyping everything.

Get a normal life first pursuing other careers to MAKE A LIVING. At the same time try to break into the film industry. If you really can do you will do it one day. Most importantly is that you have faith in your self. When opportunity comes, grab it promptly!

If you want to get in to acting, see about getting in to community theater or take some classes at the local community college and hone your skills there. You'll quickly find out if you really want to pursue it as a career or not.
