The 1.2-kg slider is released from rest in position A and slides without friction along the vertical-plane guide shown. Determine (a) the speed vB of the slider as it passes position B and (b) the maximum deflection delta of the spring.

(a) Relative to point B,
PE = mgh = 1.2kg * 9.8m/s² * 4.5m = 48.6 J
With no losses, the KE at B is 48.6 J, and so
48.6 J = ½mv² = ½ * 1.2kg * v²
v = 9 m/s ◄

(b) Relative to point E,
PE = 1.2kg * 9.8m/s² * 3m = 35.3 J.
That becomes spring energy U, so
35.3 J = ½kx² = ½ * 24000N/m * x²
x = 0.054 m = 5.4 cm ◄
