I spent most of my life in the Roman Catholic church--being part of the church--and they did not allow visits even to other parish churches -- which were Roman Catholic--much less another denomination---that is my experience when I was in the church growing up and being part of the church--if you attended a non-Catholic church--you (I) had to go to Confession and penance. Special writing and permission was given to attend any other church except Catholic church.
Shroud: the authority is only in Jesus Christ: since human (priests, pastors etc) are flawed and do fail--protestants are not splintering more than any other religious body--since the devil does not cherry pick which church to go to--he exercises equal opportunity in any establishment that promotes God or the Holy Trinity. As a Christian--one should not be proud of the down fall or the falling away of anyone believer or non-believer for that matter.
