What is the differences between velocity and speed? Can someone explain to me?

I have read many explanation online but it just made it more confusing for me. Can someone explain to me clearly without all the difficult words? I thought velocity changes if its direction/speed changed. But i read that "Imagine a person moving rapidly - one step forward and one step back - always returning to the original starting position. While this might result in a frenzy of activity, it would result in a zero velocity."
i dont get why it would be zero velocity when stepping back and forth will change the direction??

perhaps the best way to maybe avoid confusion is to think as simple as possible.

velocity is speed with specific direction (vector)

speed is only a number. (magnitude) it can be +tive or negative depending on the +tive direction we choose.

example: a person travelling at 15 m/s speed. however velocity would be a person travelling at 15 m/s speed due west.

also velocity = total displacement / time

and speed = total distance traversed / time

displacement implies the distance between the start point and finish point. if they are the same then disp. = 0 = velocity

Imagine a person moving rapidly - one step forward and one step back - always returning to the original starting position. While this might result in a frenzy of activity, it would result in a zero velocity.

in this ii quick steps(negligible time between) consist of our sample displacement. start point and end point is same. hence displacement = 0 = velocity(more like an average or resultant velocity)

however speed is not 0 as the same distance has been covered twice: back and forth. so the speed = 2d / [Δt]

d = distance covered in 1 step

hope this helps

speed is just a magnitude. it has no direction and is simply calculated by the displacement/time
velocity is a vector it has a magnitude and acts in a direction. For example you could have a velocity of 8m/s in the northern direction, western direction at a angle etc. Furthermore velocity is the change in displacement/time

Speed is a scalar and velocity is a vector. Basically velocity includes speed and direction while speed is only speed.
You are going 25 m/s, ok, but which way? That is speed. Velocity would be something like 25 m/s north at an angle of 10 degrees above the plane.
