Nikon d5300 lens for a wedding?

Going to my brothers wedding in May and I need a good quality lens other then dumb kit lens 18-55mm that I can't do nothing with. I'm on a strict budget an can only afford $200-$250 Bc im saving up for the wedding which is clear across the country. What would be good for wedding photography for kids running around but yet still take great portraits? Also I am NOT his photographer no where close to being that good lol, I want these for my own personal practice but since he's family I want to expand my quality lol idk if that even makes sense.

Given your rather limited budget then I'd suggest the 50mm f1.8. It's a fast lens so good for lower light situations if flash is not allowed.

You could also invest in the 55-200mm for a bit of reach.

Both that and your kit lens will be fine for shots where there's plenty of light. They will struggle in low light though.

Consider adding a TTL compatible speedlight as well.

If you can't do anything with the 18mm-55mm kit lens, which is perfectly adequate for most kinds of photography, then I'm afraid a new lens won't help.

The 18-55mm lens is great for weddings!

At around 35mm, you can shoot the entire ceremony up close to where the action is. At around 18mm, you can get those large group portraits that happen after the wedding. At around 50mm, you can capture the most romantic portraits of the couple. Kids running around? No problem with a setting of anywhere from 24mm to 40mm. Just use common sense with the zoom ring. It's not rocket science. The kit lens isn't dumb. Only the user can be.

What you may need especially if you'll be doing indoor shots is a powerful flash gun. Be sure you get one that is completely TTL-compatible to your camera and only get from Nikon.

Please elaborate on "can't do nothing". What are the things that you're trying to do with this lens where it comes up short? It's a good all around lens.

Or are you tricking us with the grammatical double negative and in fact are saying, "I can do everything with"? But then you wouldn't be asking the question, would you?

The 18-55 is actually an excellent lens in that focal length range. Who is using the lens is really the KEY !

Add a 55-200 and you will have a good kit. And practice, practice, practice.

A 24-120mm, 85mm, or 50 mm 1.8 would be great!
