Because you are asking the things in the past but affecting the things happening now. Therefore, you CANNOT use "simple past" but you should use "present perfect"
Did you take a course ==> Talking about a specific time so cannot use it here

不可以,我個人認為要用現在完成式, 因為有before的出現,所以應該是:
