Employer wants to change redundancy terms at the last minute !?

Following a merger with a sister company, my company is moving from London to the Midlands, so I will be opting for redundancy (between 2-9 months from now), as it's too far to commute.

My issue is that I've heard that the company we're merging with is drawing up new contracts for all employees reducing redundancy provision from the generous terms of our current contracts to the legal minimum. Can they legally impose this new contract on those of us that they know are opting for redundancy ?

Just to clarify, I'm asking whether the company can legally force me to resign if I refuse to sign the new contract, or if they can bring the redundancy forward out of spite.

Yes they can change the terms, and if you refuse to sign the new contract you have made yourself jobless.
Companies are not stupid, they usually involve Solicitors in redundancy to make sure it is legal.
