This may be a stupid question, but I can't find the answer by just Internet searching and I'm curious. My great-grandpa worked on a Navaho reservation, and we think he was Native American, but it's always been a family conspiracy because he was adopted and I don't think any of his grandchildren cared enough to ask him when he was alive.
Also, I currently live in Oklahoma (I can get a college scholarship if I'm Native American). He and his side of the family lived in Utah, so it's not like he worked for one of the Navaho reservations here.
So if anyone knows the answer to my question, please feel free to tell me! And thank you guys in advance. :)

There is only one Navajo reservation. And part of it is in Utah. Tribal scholarships are given by the tribes themselves, to their own citizens. You can only get a Navajo scholarship if you are enrolled in the Navajo tribe. And it's academically competitive. And you have to speak fluent Navajo, and have a history of community service within the tribe. And intend to use your degree to benefit the tribe.Even if your great-grandfather were full-blood, and that could be documented and proven, (opening the adoption records) it would only make you 1/8th, which isn't enough to qualify for citizenship. ( 1/4 is the minimum) But that's ok, since you don't qualify for a scholarship anyway.
No, you don't have to be native American to work on the reservation. There are many non-native people working here.
If you think he was Navajo, then petition to get the adoption records opened (not hard to do nowadays) and find out.

A good number of Non-Navajos work on the reservation, either for the government (BIA or Department of the Interior) or they work for the tribe.
