If you are a back-packer, it's great. I met a woman who came to Japan with just a backpack. If you've got luggage, you can keep it at the front desk, but it's a hassle. Is the hassle worth 3000 yen? Depends.

All I can say is that laundry may be an issue if you are backpacking.

At any rate, what do you do in a hotel when you travel? If you just sleep there, the capsule is a good idea. If you need to spread out, re-pack, do laundry, play noisy video games, talk with friends . . . it might be better to get a regular room. Or even cheaper, once you add in laundry, cafe fees, etc.

BTW, in most hotels, you pay by the person, not by the room. So, it costs for more four people to share a room. A love hotel is another relatively inexpensive option for two travellers, but there are issues with that, too.

These are mainly used by salarymen who are too drunk / tired to go home. There's no room for anything but you.
Your luggage won't fit. Depending on how big you are , it may or may not be a good fit.
You'll have to use a public restroom / bath.
It might be fun just for one night. The run around $35 a night.

Perhaps for just a night, for the experience.

Capsule hotels are generally speaking more expensive than International Youth Hostels. You won't be getting a "free" breakfast at a capsule hotel, like you would at a typical business hotel, hostel or minshuku. Therefore it you are asking if you should go to Japan and stay at capsule hotels as a budgetary strategy...it doesn't make much sense. Then there's the fact that there are IYHs at every popular tourist destination.....but you will not find a capsule hotel in say, Nikko or Nara.

If you want to go to Japan and stay at a love hotel, sauna or capsule hotel for the hell of it, then go for it. Sauna is actually a pretty good option, there's usually a sleeping room and you can stay up to 24 hours.

capsule hotels are of no practical use for travellers, they are only really designed for short over night stays for people with no luggage etc.

if you are going with more than one person, then staying at an actual hotel room would be around the same price.
but if you're going by yourself, a capsule hotel is your best bet.

Personally, I don't like staying at a capsule hotel when I visit another country.
