The sermon on the Mount is a call to the Jewish audience to restored righteousness. There are some points in the book of Nehemiah, centuries earlier, that show Jesus certainly knew about this godly man and how the word of God was rediscovered back then.

Jesus said that God's word remains relevant forever (Mat 5:17-19) and so did Nehemiah, who clearly explained the meaning of the Book of the Law and helped the people understand each passage (Neh 8:8).

Nehemiah also defended the oppressed Israelites (chap. 5) and Jesus lifted them up, giving them fresh hope that they were already in the Kingdom even though their religious leaders tried to make them think they were not worthy of it.

Nehemiah also knew how essential prayer is and he was a man of prayer (Neh 1:1 and 2:1). He had spent four months in intercessory prayer, such was his concern for Jerusalem! Jesus was even more-so a man of prayer, and he taught the Jews who listened to Him how to pray.

So those are a few points of similarity I would say relates the sermon on the Mount to Nehemiah.

Jesus would be familiar with Nehemiah's writings because Jesus studied the law and the prophets. Nehemiah addressed the social issues of his day such as the complaints of the poor and the cancellation of debts (chapter 5). However, the Beatitudes more closely relate to the sentiments of David in Psalm 27 and 37.

Interestingly, Matthew 5:5 which says the meek shall inherit the earth, is better translated from the Hebrew of Psalm 37:11 (from which Jesus is quoting) as "the meek will inherit the land." Psalm 37:11 is speaking of the land of Israel, and Jesus was speaking to his Jewish countrymen and women when he gave the sermon on the mount. They would recognise the words of Psalm 37:11 as applying to them and to God's promises to his chosen people.
