What is better - Yams or Sweet Potato?

I prefer sweet potatoes. I've had yams once or twice before and I wasn't really that keen on them. I prefer the sweetness of sweet potatoes. Yams didn't taste sweet to me. Plus, sweet potatoes have lots more beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A.
Yams are a bit hard to find in the supermarkets where I live, for some reason. Maybe if they were more available, I'd be able to cook with them more often. But for me, I prefer sweet potatoes.

WHITE yams. They are a superfood with far more nutrients and vitamins than other yams or sweet potatoes. They are sold at Whole Foods (or whatever the cheaper alternative is where you live) and many grocery stores too.

Yams if of the right variety. There are over 1000 varieties of edable yams. A sweet potato is rather fibery and from S. America. A Yam was first named in writing in Africa. So the Yam as for the name is African. It was ate in Europe and Asai. sweet potato was first found by the Spanish and they named it and returned to Europe with it. Were they found it could be cross bred with Yams. Been many years past that I have ate a native sweet potato in S. America. Not what you buy in the store that is a cross bread. Here in Asia I eat a variaty of Yams. Some very good and most crossbreeds as well with other yams. Try Jolo Yam & peanut soup in a broth. Very good eating with slices of native purple carrots in it. So what today is a Yam? And a sweetpotato?

Most people haven't had real yams. The United States Department of Agriculture has done real tricky and labeled two different varieties of Sweet Potatoes as Sweet Potato and Yam.
