The past continuous:-
I was playing
I was not playing
It was having,
When the clock struck a (3-2=1)hr period, I was not playing basketball.
In the eg.two actions happened in the past at the same time. The past continuous tense is used for the longer action(=was Not playing.)
When I was not playing basketball, it was having a (3-2=1) hr. period.
In the above eg.both actions were equally long, we use the past continuous tense for both.
I was Not playing football (Let's assume back to football) throughout the whole of the (3-1=2)hrs.
In the above eg., the past continuous tense is used to express a continuous action of playing/not playing football over a specified period(=3-1=2) in the past.

注意昨天此字

(過去進行式)

1.<過去進行式>表示過去某一時刻或某一階段正在進行的動作。

2.<過去進行式>的形式是was,were+現在分詞。

3.<過去進行式>表示過去某一時刻正在進行的動作,與表示過去某一時刻的<副詞>,<副詞片語>或<副詞子句>連用。

I was having dinner at 8 yesterday evening.

昨晚八點我正在吃飯。

4.<過去進行式>表示過去某一段時間持續進行的動作。

Tom was reading a book all morning.

整個早晨湯姆都在讀書。


(過去式)

1.<過去式>表示過去發生的動作或存在的狀態,和現在沒有關係,只是一種追憶。

2.<簡單過去式>的形式由<動詞>的過去式表示;除<動詞>be外,其它<動詞>沒有人稱和數的變化,<動詞>be除第一,第三人稱{單數}用was,其餘都用were。

3.<簡單過去式>表示過去發生而現在已結束的動作或狀態,常和a moment ago,last year,yesterday,at that time,in the past等表示過去的<時間副詞>連用。

She was a little girl at that time.

她那時候是個小姑娘。

4.<簡單過去式>表示過去經常發生或習慣的動作。

I visited him twice a week in those days.

那時候我每週拜訪他兩次。

5.<簡單過去式>表示過去的經驗,常與never(從未),ever(曾經)連用。

I never met Jill.

我從未遇見過吉爾。

Did you ever see a monkey?

係過去式。不過你知唔知咩叫過去進行式?
過去進行式係指過去既時侯所發生緊既事情,分when同while兩類。
when
例如:
I was eating apple when the mobile phone rang.
eating apple需要好耐時間先食得哂,the mobile phone rang響得好快,唔會響5分鐘咁耐架!
while
例如:
She was having breakfast/lunch/afternoon tea/dinner while she was watching TV.
having breakfast/lunch/afternoon tea/dinner同樣需要好耐時間先食得哂,watching TV冇理由睇1秒架!
過去式係指過去既時侯所做既事情
例如:
A plane lost near the Philippines in the moring.
in the moring同yesterday afternoon都係過去左,加上都冇講when同while,因此係過去式。
