For Question 1, yes you can do it your way.

For Question 2, I think you must use a calculator even you use Heron's formula.

since ABO is a isos. triangle
U can divide it into 2 Congruent triangle
No need use cos law and heron's formula
U can just use pyth. theorem find the height and then area!
