Atheists, do you believe in life after death?

I'm not an atheist, but I need a serious answer. And please be mature about this.

My friend committed suicide because she was picked on by some bullies. She's been dead for nearly 4 months, and ever since then I had these thoughts on what happens after you die, and now I felt scared if there's no life after death.

So, do you believe in life after death? I'm scared to die and I miss my friend.

They only part of us that goes on living after we are died is the bacteria that feed on our rotting flesh.

If you truly want my opinion, I don't believe there are second chances. We are born, we live, we die. I am sorry for your loss. I too have had friends and a favorite uncle commit suicide. Since I don't believe in an afterlife or second chances, I try to live my life to the fullest and treat the people in my life with love and respect.

Of course not. The definition of "death " is "the end of life". That makes it very clear that life is the time BEFORE death, not after.

First of all, I'm incredibly sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what it must be like to go through something like that, and I hope for her sake that there is an afterlife and she's there. I'm an agnostic atheist, so my views aren't really set on anything, but I know there's a varying scale of beliefs on this. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in god, so belief in an afterlife is still plausible for an atheist. I know many atheists believe that there is nothing after death, and you cease to exist when you die. Many others however, favor an idea of reincarnation, or disembodied observance of the universe, unable to contact or affect it in anyway, but simply able to watch the events unfold. Some do believe in an afterlife, simply un facilitated by any higher power. Personally, I think that at the moment you die, your conscienceless freezes in time and you continue life in another dimension, and each time you die you move on to another, which offers infinite chances to live, with each life picking up where the last left off.

You seem to be looking for people to tell you there is no afterlife. Why else would you direct this Q to atheists, even though you say you aren't an atheist?

I assume our lives have meaning, because we are destined to do certain things. And that is all I know. To the extent we maximize our potential, we are doing the "right" thing. I don't know what happens when we die.

Thinking, is the most biggest gift for us. There's no people can tell if life after death exists or not. But, believing is the most good natural skill for us.

I have seen many of the dead and as an eye-witness I assure you, they don't go anywhere or do anything. They are dead.

If a person were skeptical enough to not trust even his own eyes, why would he accept such a bizarre idea as people being alive when they are long dead and dust?

I do not believe in life after death. I don't see any evidence or reasoning for how someone would live on spiritually.

Death can be scary to think about, especially b/c it is unknown. How can you really understand non-existence? However, I would assume that like before being born (when I didn't exist), death will be much the same. I also realize that I am not afraid of not being reincarnated, I am not afraid of not reaching Nirvana, therefore why be afraid of not reaching heaven (which is the afterlife belief I was raised with). When you die, you will not know it, you will just stop existing. It was a though that I was uncomfortable with and it took time to adjust to that knowledge. It is hard to think that someone is forever gone, which is why I think so many people really believe that there is some sort of afterlife.

I think you need to seek comfort from those who share a similar belief to your own. Atheist do not believe in an afterlife, therefore you will not really find comfort in our answers. The belief in an afterlife helps people cope with an inevitable death. There are so many people to talk to. You can speak with counselor, a religious figure (rabbi, priest, pastor, etc), a psychologist.

I personally do not, although being an atheist does not specifically mean you necessarily do not, as an atheist can still be spiritual and believe in supernatural things, just not any given deity.

I am genuinely sorry for the loss of your friend, no one should ever have to feel suicide is the only way out and the aftermath left for the people that cared about those who take that route is terrible. If you want my perspective the best I feel you can do is remember them for who they were not for what their depression and bullies made of them and try to remember to be kind to others lest you accidentally have a hand in a similar case.

Why do you asks atheists ? Is it because you fear your friend is in hell ? God is the final judge

Only a sick god would design a world where people strong enough to endure being skinned alive, being infected with thousands of diseases, people that have deadly bacteria inside them that keep them alive; yet would kill themselves over being teased. Your friend killed herself because she was weak, not because someone else did something. For someone so weak it would be impossible to have more life than what they wanted.

There is NO evidence for any life after death, and no reason to believe that there might be such a thing.

When I was younger I thought it might be possible. Now I don't think it is possible.

Existence after death is not that which is attributed to any of the thousands upon thousands of gods mankind has created and worshipped through the centuries but that which is us, our energy does carry on into other lives and existences.

Your imaginary friend can still go to imaginary heaven if she imaginarily kills herself.

"At the moment of death, our soul rises out of its host body. If the soul is older and has experience from many former lives, it knows immediately it has been set free and is going home. These advanced souls need no one to greet them. However, most souls I work with are met by guides just outside Earth's astral plane.
A young soul, or a child who has died, may be a little disoriented until someone comes closer to ground level for them. There are souls who choose to remain at the scene of their death for a while. Most wish to leave at once. Time has no meaning in the spirit world. Discarnates who choose to comfort someone who is grieving, or have other reasons to stay near the place of their death for a while, experience no sense of time loss. This becomes now time for the soul as opposed to linear time.
Homecoming is a JOYOUS interlude, especially following a physical life where there might not have been much karmic contact with our intimate soulmates. Most of my subjects tell me they are welcomed back with HUGS, LAUGHTER and much HUMOR, which I find to be a hallmark of life in the spirit world."

Destiny of Souls - Michael Newton

“Regardless of their state of mind right after death, my subjects are full of exclamations about rediscovered marvels of the spirit world. Usually, this feeling is combined with EUPHORIA that all their worldly cares have been left behind, especially physical pain. Above all else, the spirit world represents a place of supreme quiescence to the traveling soul.
Although it may at first appear we are alone immediately following death, we are not isolated or unaided. Unseen intelligent energy forces guide each of us through the gate. New arrivals in the spirit world have little time to float around wondering where they are or what is going to happen to them next. Our guides and a number of soulmates and friends wait for us close to the gateway to provide recognition, affection, and the assurance we are all right. Actually, we feel their presence from the moment of death because much of our initial readjustment depends upon the influence of these kindly entities toward our returning soul.
Since encountering friendly spirits who meet us after death is so important, how do we recognize them? I find a general consensus of opinion among subjects in hypnosis about how souls look to each other in the spirit world. A soul may appear as a mass of energy, but apparently it is also possible for non-organic soul energy to display human characteristics. Souls often use their capacity to project former life forms when communicating with each other. Projecting a human life form is only one of an incalculable number of appearances which can be assumed by souls from their basic energy substance.”

I can understand why you'd be scared to die and that you miss your friend. Unfortunately reality isn't necessarily what we yearn for it to be. When you die, you cease to exist. That's it.

No.

Everyone is scared to die. As far as there being an afterlife, no one will ever know. I truly want to believe because I want to see my loved ones and be with them forever. I want to believe so that it makes me feel better. It helps cope with a death of a close family or friend.

No, I wish it were true, but there is no evidence suggesting it is.

yes, but not for the person who died.......

You were created in Gods image meaning you will live forever in one of two places, heaven or hell. Your friend committed suicide, she is in heaven if she had Jesus as her Lord and Savior. If you have Jesus there is no reason to fear death. In fact Jesus followers are not supposed to worry or have the spirit of fear. We are to carry ourselves boldly telling others about Jesus.
