Hi I'm just really amused after I just got a quote of 7,675 Euro for car insurance per year for a 17 year old
I have driven a motorcycles before for only 700 Euro per year
The insurance companies are a disgrace these days asking for so much money.
what are the reasons for this.
and don't tell me it's careless driving because it's bull crap. I got rear ended on a motorcycle by a jeep and it was a 30 year old so accidents can happen to anyone.
by the way I'm in Ireland
Statistically, more accidents happen among young people. You yourself might be a safe driver, but the insurance company is going to err on the side of caution and place you in the high-risk category because you're younger and have less experience driving a car.
the most frequent accidents occur in a teenage to mid twenty bracket
Age i son ly one factor in your insurance premium, but it is one of the most important. As StephieSD said, you are placed in a cohort with others of your age (usually something like 16 - 18 year olds or 16 - 21 year olds). Insurance companies then start creating premiums based on this category with adjustments for other factors, including gender (females are safer), location (some areas have higher crime rates), car make and model (some models/makes are more expensive to fix), etc. As a 17 year, that immediately places you in the highest priced cohort (in the U.S., and I assume numbers are the same in Ireland), for every 100,000 drivers 19 and under, there are 38 accidents, compared to 36 for 20 to 24 year olds, 24 for 25 to 34 year olds, etc.). If you should also buy a sports car and live in a relatively high crime neighborhood, your rates go up.
They forget about the rules.
they have a higher percentage of stupid and careless drivers than older drivers
So they are higher risk
Young drivers are more likely to face accidents and the ratio of claim is higher than other age group that is why insurance companies charge high. It's normal but you may search and compare what other companies are offering. Choose the best one that suits you.
Young drivers are having higher proportion of accidents. May be, due to this reason they need to pay more
Quite simply . . . younger drivers file more claims. That's why the rates are higher.
The reasons are
1) Young drivers have a much higher accident rate
2) The EU no longer allows insurance companies to charge different prices based on gender, so they have to charge very high price for all young drivers. (In the U.S., they charge the highest prices only for males, and charge less for females, but the EU doesn't allow this.)
Accidents happen to people of all ages, but young drivers have a much higher rate of claims.
It is high because t 17, you are an inexperienced driver and have not proven(over time) that you have good driving habits and skills.
As a former auto adjuster (10 years handling claims) can tell you that teenagers are just plain stupid when they drive.
You talk/text on the phone while driving. You have multiple friends in the car, and not paying attention. Most of you, have no clue what the speed limit is, and drive faster. You take more chances, since you "think" you will make that turn in time, only to hit someone else. You run lights, vs stopping. You fail to see that someone "suddenly" brakes, for no reason and rear end that person.
Kids love shopping malls and more accidents happen in parking lots. I can go on and on, and the odds are by the age of 25, my guess, you will be in at least 3 accidents, and have numerous tickets, since you are a teenager.
Rates are based on statistics (facts).
For every 3 claims I got, at least 2 of them were teenagers vs an adult.
google auto accidents and teenagers and will see why they charge so much.
