Suffix + Prefix +Pronunciation should be learnt by you:-
eg:-For suffix (ending of words)
eg:-ter=-er, -or
eg:-counter; joiner; pager; doctor; actor; beggar; near; hair; tour;

For prefix (beginning of words)
eg:-vi=vice-
eg:-vice-president;vice-caption; vice-chancellor (related adjective, next in rank to somebody to act for them.
vital ; vise(=vise-like grip tool); vision; voice;victor, vicuna, video---video camera---video phone, view-point, village, vine, virtual world by a computer, vision, visit, viva(for expressing support for somebody), voice of America
Hence try learn the sound by your speaking.^_^

Godfrey is absolutely right about looking the word up in the dictionary to find out the pronunciation. Don't just imagine by referring to so-called Rules of pronunciation.

There are some words that even some teachers pronounce wrongly, h-mute or b-mute (debt, plumber...) and many more.

Strictly speaking, "oven -- ah + ven" is not correct.
oven (ˈʌvn) 重音在前
o = ʌ (short vowel of u)
e = no sound

vehement (熱烈的,激烈的) h是無音 (silent h), sounds like “vee-ment”
有如 honest, honour (h 是無音)
