In answering c), the other question can be answered. Both normal chiller and heat pump uses the refrigerant cycle to operate the system. The function of a chiller is to provide cooling (or heat absorption) to the interior space in which the absorbed heat is rejected to external space. The function of the heat pump is primarily to provide heating (source heat) to heat delivery devices (typically water heater and space heating)The heat pump system uses the heat in the refrigerant circuit during operation to heat up a connected “water” system. Therefor e, it is called air-to-water heat pump chiller system. Summer:Interior: indoor unit absorb space heat air become cold → cold refrigerant → Heat Pump Chiller hot refrigerant → absorbed heat reject/transfer heat exchanger → water (supply hot water) → excess/unused heat reject to external ambient: Exterior. Winter:Interior: indoor air unit reject heat from refrigerant to heat space (parallel refrigerant circuit) ← water (supply hot water) ← absorbed heat reject/transfer heat exchanger (parallel refrigerant circuit) ← Heat Pump Chiller ← cold refrigerant ← absorb cold air heat: Exterior. As the above writing direction cannot show, the system has different loops to divert the cold/hot refrigerant from the refrigerant compressor according to the control setting for the heating/cooling required in space and/or water supply. Due to the common/simultaneous heating required (both water and space in some large/capacity design) and cooling required varies for different climate and building/home needs, heat pump design and selection is more complicated than air-conditioner; however, due to the use of waste heat of the refrigerant circuit and better heat transfer efficiency than electric water heat, the overall operating efficiency (i.e. electricity input against the energy use demand for space heating/cooling and water heating) is very good in lower the total energy cost if the system is chosen and operated appropriately.
