what is an example of foreshadowing?

First, spoiler warning.
Second, in the book, Ender's Game, Ender repeatedly approaches his enemies with a "total war" attitude: in order stem off future conflicts, he hurts his enemies so badly that they'll never think about hurting him again. That foreshadows how humans are reacting to the buggers: hurt them so badly that they'll never want to hurt humanity again.
However, Ender's Game has a double-foreshadow. Just as Ender's approach to dealing with his enemies foreshadows the reveal of humanity's tactic against the buggers, Ender's own ignorance of the consequences of his actions against his enemies foreshadows his ignorance of humanity's actions against the buggers. Throughout the book, Ender keeps killing people, but the knowledge that he's killed them is kept from him until towards the end (before he goes to Command School, if I recall correctly). That reveal foreshadows that when Ender is fighting against the buggers in what he thinks are simulations, he is actually killing the buggers, culminating in that final battle. Just as the knowledge that he had killed other children was kept from him, the knowledge that he was killing buggers was kept from him until he'd already exterminated them.
