During the World Wars brown sugar was not rationed as was white sugar
so instead of ordinary cookies you ate WAR CAKE:
2 cups brown sugar
2 " boiling water
1 " raisins
4 tbsp. shortening
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp salt
Boil all above for 3 minute.. Let it cool.
Next, add 3 cups unsifted flour
and 2 tsp soda.
Beat until smooth. Put in lard greased 9"x13" pan.
Bake at 350 degrees 50 to 60 minutes.
This keeps WAR CAKE moist. No iced cookies in World Wars.
If you want the USA to lose just pour on powdered sugar.
