My son is in high school in ny and he is taking government honor class. However, due to his government teacher's accent , he can't understand her lesson (my son is not native english speaker so this give him a hard time) he told me that he want to transfer out but the AP did not allow him to do so.My question is is it possible to change to another class is also honor but different teacher(my son told me that he can't change to another teacher since the AP said she can't change you to different honor class just because you don't like the teacher),but I heard that the school can change him to regular class . He don't want to drop from honor to regular ,is there any solution to let the school change him from a honor class to another? (There are two honor class at the same period) Thank You

You have a legitimate reason. Two conflicting non native accents make it difficult for your son to understand the teacher. Your need to go and talk to the principal. Do not say anything negative about his current teacher just present it as a language problem for your son. If you are pleasant and positive they may change him.

Schools are stubborn - you have an excellent point - it's not that your son dislikes the teacher - he cannot understand her accent.

Don't back down on this. The school can change him! Write to the AP people and complain - AP curriculum comes from a company in Princeton New Jersey.

Don't back down. Tell them they are discriminating against your son because English is not his first language. They are not meeting his needs as an ESL student!

Schools make their own policies and they can certainly generalize this problem as not "liking" the teacher instead of the language gap. Although I am a native English speaker, I admit that I had one D in college. The class was 8:00 A.M. and he has a native Indian dialect speaker. I doubt if I understood even 20% of any lecture. I would have understood the concept if I knew what he heck he was saying. I had to suffer through it.
But this is high school. What about making an appointment with the guidance counselor. Discuss the problem together and ask for recommendations on how your son can succeed when he can't understand the teacher due to accent.
