F.5 Maths dispersion's measure

2014-10-02 8:57 pm
The table shows the numbers of children in 60 families.
No.of children (no.of families)
0 (8)
1 (20)
2 (16)
3 (11)
4 or more (5)

Can range and standard deviation be used as the measures of dispersion in this
case? Explain briefly.

The answer is no. Is it because the difference between the no of children is too
small? Moreover, can the inter-quartile range be used?(the question did not ask
but I want to know)
Please help!

5 families with 4 or more children can mean :
4,4,4,4,5
4,5,6,7,8
4,6,6,6,6 etc.
So the average no. of children of each family cannot be determined, thus the standard deviation cannot be determined.
Since the largest no. of children cannot be determined, so range and IQR cannot be determined.
