Would it be possible to successfully mix a very large dog breed with a very small dog breed?
for example, mixing an english mastiff with a chihuahua. obviously artificial insemination would be needed, but would the puppies actually live and everything?
just asking out of curiosity, i don't plan on actually trying it lol.

Can you imagine something the size of a Mastiff, with a Terrier temperament? Eeek! Aesthetics aside, some crosses should never be made. I like crosses and have a couple but they are well considered mixes, not flawed designs created for quirky looks alone.
A mastiff with a chihuahua. What a crazy mutt that would make. I don't know if you could do it, but it would be great!
If the female is larger. I have heard of ambitious Yorkies impregnating Great Danes while they lay down.
Why anyone would want to, now that is another question... "this puppy could be anything from 2 to 200 lbs when it grows up, hope you surprises!".
As long as the mother is the large breed puppies could result, whether the puppies turn out to be nice dogs is an entirely different question.
For this not to kill the small b itch, obviously the bigger one would have to be the dam. So the sire would need to be the Chi. and that could happen. Otherwise I seriously doubt the small Chi would be able to carry to term or whelp the puppies, never mind accommodate a Mastiff for the act. I'm surprised your vet didn't tell you that - @ Angel!
Theory is if the female is the larger and the male is the smaller. I got into one of those strange discussions with. My vet when he was inseminating several of the horses..... It just spilled out of my mouth.... Something like... Hey doc, is it possible to cross a minpin like my Auggie doggie with a Newfoundland? Would the pups be viable? He simply laughed at me and said it was possible, however the pups could vary in size from very small to pretty big. There wouldn't be a 3 ounce pup and say a 3 pound pup born together but he said it may look like runt, runt, giant, normal, runt normal, giant normal etc.
Then he pointed out that one of my favorite horses Gypsy was from a miniature horse stallion of some 400 pounds give or take.... And he managed to say Hello! To a 2800 pound shire mare. Gypsy was the thin mini baby that was the result. Instead of the 100 to 130 pound foal that came out, she was about 75 pounds and looked so lost standing nest to mom by comparison. She grew into a healthy mis, stocky draft lets with long hair, she was jet black but turned grey around 15 years old. I'm not sure now that she is 25 if she will go all the way white or not.
So it should be possible in theory to do so. From what I was told. Same species dog to dog.
