Parents forcing me to pursue a career I have no interest in, help?

I like drawing and making art and stories but my mum is saying that I have to become a doctor or lawyer or she is going to kick me out and punish me.

I don't want to do that stuff though cause I find it so boring and when I die I don't want to think back on all the time I spent doing something I have no interest in just for money.

i'd rather pursue story telling and art and I am not entirely sure how much money I will make but I will work hard to reach a position where i make enough money to support a family.

How can I convince my parents to let me become an artist?

I am a published author of both Technical and creative writing articles - about 200 such articles.

The drawing and story interests you have are wonderful hobbies but are extremely difficult careers to earn a living at. You may not be suited for a doctor or lawyer situation but because you are living at home your parents can have a lot of input. Right now there are probably 100 people reading this who would love to be in your situation with parents who can help towards their educational expenses.

So in the short term you should enjoy your hobby on the side and try to keep from any major conflicts with parents. Pick a career that will make them happy and will not be too painful for you. If you get to the 1/2 way point towards graduation and still feel the way you do you can make some changes. Just don't count on an art and creative writing career for your livelihood.

Best wishes!

The reason that they are encouraging you to choose a different field is that you will not be able to get job that will pay enough for you to live on in the Art field. Choose a good paying career and then do your art as a hobby until you become famous where you can make a living wage. Good Luck

All kids like story telling and drawing but they grow up and have careers too which may or may not involve story telling and drawing. Keep your likes for a hobby and work on them in the background but you do need qualifications in some other field too for the bread and butter of living until /if / when your story telling and drawing becomes financially viable.

There are plenty of doctors who are also artists. Some write children's books and so on. With ALL the kids today wanting to become and artist or be a director or actor it will only get worse to make a living at. I work in entertainment and wish I was a doctor today so I could fund my own projects.

it's important for them to know that it's your life, not theirs. You have the rights to choose what you want to do. As you said, you don't want to regret what you did when you die. So tell your parents, you want to live your life, do what you want, if they love you, they will understand
