While you are at boot camp, all of the none-swimmers (aka sinkers) will be rounded up to take a swimming lesson. The Navy will only attempt to teach you how to float & claw your way from one side of the pool to the other, so you can pass boot camp (and you will still, more than likely, be a sinker after boot camp). It will not be very hands on and you will not have a whole lot of time to practice properly; there are too many sinkers and too little instructors as well as too little time on top of your regular training. You will be screamed at, you will panic, and you will cry. Therefore, do yourself a big favor and learn how to swim before going to boot camp (you do not have to be Michael Phelps; just know the basic will do). Look for a local YMCA, if there is a swimming class available.
參考: I was a Navy 1st Class Swimmer and was going to be a Navy Swimming Instructor (but a better slot came along).

I highly suggest getting practice right now. Even if you do sign up it would be a good 4-6 months before you actually ship out to bootcamp, all that time would be perfect for you to get fit, meet your goals and learn how to swim. Yeah they will pull you to the side with anyone else who doesn't know how to swim and teach you, but then you'll be set back from alot of the rest of the training, eventually making it hard for you to catch up with the rest. You should sign up I highly encourage you, I myself am leaving to navy bootcamp this upcoming monday, a little nervous lol

How about you get off butt & learn? Waiting till your on the platform is not the time to learn. People die yearly for lack of this basic skill.

nope. you are not going to get one on one training. you will be lumped together in a group and taught basic strokes and expected to basically teach yourself..in a vey short time frame.

you'd be better off getting lessons NOW and while you are in DEP.

At bootcamp they will teach you but it's highly recommended you learn before hand. You don't want personal training at bootcamp! Most places like YMCA, swim clubs, and schools do swimming classes for pretty cheap! :)

Yes, the Navy will teach you to swim. Navy is a good choice, you can make a really good life in the Navy == or you can make yourself miserable.
It's all in what YOU put into it.
