fall 可做名詞或動詞
動詞有五種型式,
fall, falls, fell (past tense), fallen (past participle), falling (present participle)
She is falling in love. 她墜入愛河
Pronoun + (auxiliary verb + present participle) + (preposition + noun)
Subject + present continuous + adverbial phrase
在這句子, falling不是名詞, 不是 gerund (動名詞)
因為不是做 subject, object, complement, object of preposition
falling 是 present participle, 用來 form present continuous tense
進行式當然可以作動詞
fall 是 intransitive verb (不及物動詞), 沒有 object
"in love" – prepositional phrase (preposition + noun),
你老師話 in love 係副詞組 (adverbial), 我絕對同意
"副詞組" 至少兩個字組成, 有副詞功能, 形容動詞
She falls (on the floor) 副詞組
She fell (at home) 副詞組
“In romantic relationships, falling in love is concept of moving from a feeling of neutrality towards a person to one of love.”
~ from wikipedia.org
“falling in love” 是 subject (主語) of the sentence. ~ present participial phrase functions as a noun phrase.
falling 含意是 moving, - an action, 所以不是 linking verb
“fall in love
- (intransitive, of a person, animate object following “with”) To come to have feelings of love directed at another person or a thing.
I fell in love with him the moment I first saw him.” ~ from wiktionary
牛津, Longman, wiktionary 字典視 fall 為 intransitive verb.
Macmillan 和 Merriam Webster 字典視 fall 為 linking verb
我自己覺得 “is falling” 如果當是 linking verb 怪怪地,
She is falling in love.
fall 是 linking verb, “in love” 是 adjectival phrase.
fall 是 intransitive verb, “in love” 是 adverbial phrase.

To Ling:
No offence.
predicate = 謂語; adverb = 副詞
傳統上
Predicate is all that part of a sentence which is not the subject.
在這句, "She is falling in love."
She 是 subject
"is falling in love" 是 predicate.
"in love" 是 prepositional phrase, part of the predicate

To Dustin:
fall + adjective = become + adjective
fall + asleep, silent, ill ~ OK
is falling in love 變成 is becoming in love, 怪怪地, 不同 is in love
falling in love, to fall in love,
Treating "fall "as a linking verb is beyond comprehension for most learners.
fall 是 intransitive verb 比較容易了解
