A question about insurance, and Uber.?

My wife and I have State Farm. Our local agent told me that if we had an accident, while driving other people, using our car as a "taxi," i.e. Uber, any damages or injuries would NOT be covered by our insurance.

Don't people think of this when they turn their PERSONAL VEHICLE into a 'self-employed "taxi?"

In all personal auto policies, they exclude coverage in the above case and also in the course of business. A good example is a pizza delivery.

If you use your vehicle as a taxi, or if you deliver pizzas, then you must get a commercial policy or a rider/endorsement on your own personal policy and pay the addtl premium to be covered.

If you use your vehicle for any commercial purpose, which will also include delivering pizza as well as being a taxi, you will not be covered unless you have commercial insurance coverage. People should know, it's a standard clause in your insurance policy which you should have read.

Yea, Our agent said that he did not issue commercial insurance for taxis. Had to be REAL TAXIS - not personal vehicles with a mustache on the front. He heard that it would cost an additional $1,200 a year to get a real taxi commercial insurance. Just a matter of time before something bad happens to someone doing Uber and the passengers get killed...
