Yes. Your experience as a person with "differences" will be invaluable. I am autistic and I was a successful pediatric RN before arthritis and poor vision has me switching to teaching art now. You can go into any field you care to, including mental health, OB/GYN, ER, and/or oncology. I did pediatrics for over 25 years including oncology, emergency room, ICU and many others, and as a student, I was introduced to all the fields, as you will be in order to become a successful doctor. I gravitated towards children because it seemed to be what most fulfilled me, and I was right, though I enjoyed taking care of adults too (sometimes they had diseases like cystic fibrosis, or cancers that happened more commonly in children). I did not realize I was autistic until I was in my 40s. I just thought I was an oddball, goofy, loud, clumsy, outgoing person. When I gave birth to an autistic child, as did my brother, the whole picture came clear. My inability to screen out any noise had me tapping other nurses on their shoulders to tell them their heart alarms where going off (they were charting and blocking the noise out). My attention to detail was excellent. I learned awesome social skills from the bravest parents in the world. I worked with the best doctors in the world. If you think you can make a difference, and maybe save lives, you should do it.
