It has been found that the reaction between MgO and Cl2 at 970°C give a small amount of MgCl2. Thepresence of carbon enhances the conversion of MgO to MgCl2 up to49%. The equation is :
MgO + Cl2 + C → MgCl2 + CO
The reaction is known as "carbochlorination of magnesium oxide".
The reaction can be classified as a redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction. In the reaction :
• Cl2 is reduced as the oxidation number of Cl decreases from 0 to-1.
• C is oxidized as the oxidation number of C increases from 0 to +2.
