Q1:

"pay" is a transitive verb and it takes a direct object as "pay something to somebody".

"what we were being asked for" is a noun phrase, being the direct object (something) of the verb "pay".

You use pronoun "what" to refer to "something", but "who" to refer to "someone". 所以,用WHAT 唔用WHO.

Q2:

Mourinho is 葡萄牙人,他的英語口語是"油麻地"啊。

The sentence should be:

If we sign Luke Shaw in a way that we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, we are (will be) dead.

Mourinho 歧視 young footballers who demand for huge income.

About appositive, from what I learned, it should be a noun or noun phrase, adding information to another noun.

Would Godfrey please clarify his points above-mentioned?

2014-07-29 11:36:58 補充:
What I think Mourinho meant:

If we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, to sign Luke Shaw, we are dead.
如果簽Luke Shaw 要俾如其他現役大牌球員的薪金,我們死定了。

2014-07-29 11:44:25 補充:
我嘗試分析句子的結構:

(1) "過去"被要求的某物
主動語態: 某人 was asking "us" for 某物. (某人應指"其他現役大牌球員")
被動語態: We were being asked for 某物.
名詞短語: 某物 that we were being asked for
名詞從句: what we were being asked for (沒明顯說明什麼,但應指"高收入")

(2) 我們"現在"支付(1) 給 一個19歲的男孩。
We pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for. (古怪)

2014-07-29 11:45:57 補充:
(3) appositive 同位語
We pay to a 19-year-old boy, Luke Shaw, what we were being asked for.
We pay to Luke Shaw, a 19-year-old boy, what we were being asked for.

(4) 副詞短語 "to sign Luke Shaw" (as a result, purpose)
We pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, (in order) to sign Luke Shaw.

2014-07-29 11:46:38 補充:
To sign Luke Shaw, we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for. (怪怪地,意義不太合,或者是嘲笑)

(5) make (2) as if-clause for zero-conditional
If (When) we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, we are dead.

2014-07-29 11:49:56 補充:
上接答案:

(6) make (4) as if-clause for zero-conditional

If we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, to sign Luke Shaw, we are dead.
如果簽Luke Shaw 要俾一個19歲的男孩如其他現役大牌球員的薪金,我們死定了。

下接意見欄 ...

2014-07-31 23:13:29 補充:
按句子結構,它是 zero-conditional。
If "A", we are dead.
條件"A" (if-clause) = we pay what we were being asked for to a 19-year-old boy to sign Luke Shaw
結構: we pay sth. to sb. to do sth. (to do sth. is an adverbial phrase of purpose 修飾 動詞 pay)

逗號用於分隔"pay"的兩個complements。

2014-07-31 23:57:16 補充:
Like I said, it is not a flawless sentence.

較簡單和直接的說法:

1. If we pay high salary to a 19-year-old boy such as Luke Shaw, we'll be dead.
2. If we pay big money for signing a 19-year-old boy such as Luke Shaw, we'll be dead.

Q1. .不用 who 因為不是 relative clause 形容個 boy, who 是用來形容人
who 後面的字多數是 verb,
Assume 形容個 boy
who + linking verb (is/was) + adjective/noun,
who + action verb (played for ..)
xxxx we were being asked for 本身已經有 subject, "we"

2014-07-28 04:29:07 補充:
"what we were being asked for" 是 noun clause ~ a direct object of "pay"
noun phrase 是無 verbal phrase "were being asked"

Q2. "to sign Luke Shaw" 是 appositive phrase, 用兩個豆號分開與主句, appositive 加上去,可有可無, 是 give extra information
如果刪除, 整句仍然是 complete sentence

石破天驚:

An infintive phrase can be used as ar a noun phrase.

因為有兩個豆號, ~ treated as an appositive phrase, 可有可無

這個 Sentence construction 是少有

“Tashonda's goal in life, to become an occupational therapist, is within her grasp this year, at last. [Infinitive phrase as appositive]” ~ from

Sorry, ~ typo error:

An infinitive phrase can be used as a noun phrase.
2014-07-27 5:21 am
〔1〕
"what we were being asked for"

指 「我們被要求做的事」,所以用 what 。

以上指的事是「to sign Luke Shaw」。

〔2〕
簡化句子是:
If we pay to a 19-year-old boy XXX, we are dead.

pay 這個動作的受詞一個是對象 (年輕小將勞基梳爾), 一個是內容 XXX
再用 to sign Luke Shaw 修飾 XXX。
