Is it a good idea to buy a used Korean car in Vancouver?

Hello. I have a $5000 budget to buy a used car. Based on my research on Craigslist, used Japanese cars in this price range are either very high in mileage, more than 200k, or very old models. I heard Korean car-makers made very reliable cars since mid 2000s. With $5000, I can get a Korean car with better mileage and of more recent model, like 2006 or 2007, but in metro Vancouver, is it easier to find a place to fix a Korean car, and does it cost more than Japanese cars? I have this concern because on Craigslist, there are much less used Korean cars than Japanese ones, which might suggest they have a much smaller market.

If it is not more costly to fix or maintain, there must be a catch for their cheaper price than Japanese ones. What is it?

Thanks in advance!

As with any used car, future reliability is dependent somewhat on how each model was driven and maintained. Therefore it is important to have each vehicle you're very interested in inspected by a 3rd party dealer or other trusted shop to know what kind of shape the vehicle is in and what repairs it may need within the foreseeable future.

Having said that, Hyundai and Kia have come a long way. I wouldn't rate them as high as the main Japanese brands yet but they are closing the gap. But that is a very generalized statement. Again, even if a vehicle has an above average reputation, it a particular vehicle was abused and maintenance neglected, the model's reputation means very little.

Thank you for all your answers. I will definitely have the mechanic look at it. It is a waste of money and time to do it if the result turns out to be bad though.
