How to read guitar chords? (Absolute beginner)?

the dark line at the top of the drawing is the nut of the guitar. (the part where the strings lay before going up to the tuners.)
Consider that your zero point.
All other horizontal lines are the frets, so first line is first fret and so on. So in an E chord for example, your index finger goes on the first fret of the G string (3rd string), your middle finger goes on the 2nd fret of the A string (5th string) and your ring finger goes on the 2nd fret of the D string (4th string). String numbers go 1 - 6 (on a six string guitar) from the bottom up, as you play. thinnest to thickest.
