The highest temperature measured by a alcohol-in-glass thermometer (or spirit thermometer) is about 78'C, which is the boiling point of alcohol (ethanol). Hence, alcohol-in-glass thermometer is not able to measure temperature of 170~180'C. You should use a mercury-in-glass thermometer.

In fact, the accuracy of a liquid-in-glass thermometer is not only on the types of liquid used. The construction of the termometer, like the volume of the reservoir containing the liquid, the diameter of the thermometer stem, plays an important part in its accuracy.
