The past continuous tense is used to express an action that was going on during time in the past,eg:-
As Tommy was revising the lessons, his sister was sleeping.
While he was finishing revision (gerund),the time was showing at 1 pm.
The simple past tense is used to express an action wholly completed at some point, or during some period, in the past, eg:-
Tommy went to Apple Study Room to prepare for his lesson last Wednesday.
He drove his car to the study room.
He arrived at the study room at 9:30 am.
He revised in the process of learning work for a Wednesday exam.
Note with minor changes, the past tense form in your case is not used to indicate time at all but rather suppositions implying non-fulfilment or desirability, which would be more correctly described as the past subjunctive mood which indicates that the subordinate clause (=in the process of learning work for a Wed.exam) does not express a fact, but only with your hope of could, might, would etc.
Learning how to "co-ordinate" between the principal and subordinate clauses is more important and rewarding in your sentence patterns.
