小女搞不懂relative clause,因此希望各位大師幫幫忙,解疑難~

Relative Clause

1.原句:
Elizabeth George is an excellent writer. Her novels are best-sellers.

答案應該是
Elizabeth George, whose novels are best-sellers, is an excellent writer.

還是

Elizabeth George is an excellent writer whose novels are best-sellers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.原句:
A boss has decided to deduct wages from workers for toilet breaks to offset the new
minimum wage law. The law became effective on Sunday.

答案是:A boss has decided to deduct wages form for toilet breaks to offset the new minimum wage law which became effective on Sunday.

但為什麼不能是:
The new minimum wage law, which a boss has decided to deduct wages form for toilet breaks to offset, became effective on Sunday.
?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.原句:
Workers who are treated unfairly can make a formal complaint to the Labour
Department. Many employees seek help there.

答案是不是Workers who are treated unfairly can make a formal complaint to the
Labour Department, where many employees seek help. ??

✔ 最佳答案
Relative clause is adjectival. That is, it works as an adjective to modify the "noun", either the subject or object of the main clause.
Relative clause can be
- non-restrictive, or
- restrictive

1. 答案應該是
Elizabeth George, whose novels are best-sellers, is an excellent writer.

這句必須用逗號來分隔主句和子句,因為這是"非限制性的關係從句" (non-restrictive, or non-defining relative clause) 意思是: 你不需要界定 哪一個 Elizabeth George 是個優秀的作家。

2. In the sentence, "the new minimum law" is required to be defined (需要界定) as "the one which became effective on Sunday" in order to make sense. 所以,這句不能用逗號來分隔主句和子句。
The sentence doesn't make sense if you define "the new minimum law" as "the one which a boss has decided to deduct wages from workers for toilet breaks to offset". "老闆用來扣除工資的" (形容詞) 新的最低工資法律

所以,答案是:A boss has decided to deduct wages from workers for toilet breaks to offset the new minimum wage law which became effective on Sunday.

3. 正確。
答案是: Workers who are treated unfairly can make a formal complaint to the Labour Department, where many employees seek help.

一定要用逗號分隔 "Labour Department" 和 "where"

2014-06-10 02:29:19 補充:
首先,你必須將relative clause看成一個形容詞,然後去區分哪一句是主句和從句 。

"已於星期日開始生效的" (形容詞) 新的最低工資法 (has correct meaning)

所以,
"the new minimum wage law" = subject of the relative clause, but object of the non-finite verb "to offset" (infinitive phrase of "result") in the main clause

2014-06-10 02:31:17 補充:
如果你堅持 "the new minimum wage law" 一定要放在句頭, you have to rewrite the main clause making "it" as the subject; like:

The new minimum wage law which became effective on Sunday is to be offset "by means of" (as a result of) deducting wages from workers for toilet breaks, as (recently) decided by a boss.

更正:

"to offset the new minimum wage law" is an infinitive phrase (adverbial phrase of purpose and result).

但如果要句子意思清楚,最好使用主動語態 active voice.

在第一個例子中, 兩句語法都正確, 但有不同的側重點. 那句Elizabeth George, whose novels are best-sellers, is an excellent writer. 強調了She is an excellent writer. 而第二句
Elizabeth George is an excellent writer whose novels are best-sellers. 則強調了whose novels are best-sellers. 接題目要求的話, 重點應是後一句, 所以Elizabeth George is an excellent writer whose novels are best-sellers.是正確答案.

在第2句中, A boss 是主體, 主要指出他違例, 而那句The new minimum wage law, which a boss has decided to deduct wages form for toilet breaks to offset, became effective on Sunday. 卻將主體換成了The new minimum wage law. 這是不正確的.

第3句答案是Workers who are treated unfairly can make a formal complaint to the
Labour Department WHICH many employees seek help. ?? 因Labour Department 是一個部門而不是一個地方, 所以用WHICH 而不是用WHERE.

1. the correct one should be:
Elizabeth George is an excellent writer whose novels are best-sellers.

2. the correct one should be:
A boss has decided to deduct wages form for toilet breaks to offset the new minimum wage law which became effective on Sunday.
the other one is not correct because:
-the focus in this sentence is not 'minimum wage'.
-we rarely change the subject in the original sentence.

3. yes. the answer is correct.
Workers who are treated unfairly can make a formal complaint to the
Labour Department, where many employees seek help there.

for relative clause:
1. always rmb not to change the original subject.
2. make it simple. the use of relative clause is to combine 2 sentences tgt.

hope this help :)
