A mixture of hydrogen and oxygen (more than sufficient to react with all the hydrogen present) occupied 240 cm^3. After explosion, the volume of the residual gas was 30 cm^3. What was the volume of hydrogen in the initial mixture? (All volumes were measured at room condition.)

LetV cm³ be the initial volume of H2 in themixture.

2H2 + O2 → H2O

Volume of H2 reacted = V cm³
Volume of O2 reacted = (1/2)V cm³
Volume of O2 unreacted = 30 cm³

Total initial volume of the mixture :
V + (1/2)V + 30 = 240
1.5V = 210
V = 140

Initial volume of H2 in the initial mixture = 140 cm³
