Definition of surd

2014-06-01 8:23 pm
According the the definition of most Hong Kong secondary maths textbook, Surd is an irrational number involving a radical sign.

Is "sq root of pi" a surd?
Is "2 + cubic root of 3" a surd? (Some textbooks say it should be a surd expression, not a surd.)

So, can I re-define surd as the following?
Surd is an irrational number involving a single n-th root radical sign, where n is an integer greater than 1, and where the number inside the radical sign is a rational number.

Thank you.
