The figure shows a swimming pool with the width of 24m and the length of 50m. At one end, the depth of the pool is 1m, while the depth of the other end is 3m. Let h m be the water level measured at the seeper end, V m^3 be the volume of water in the pool.
a) express V in terms of h when 0≤h≤2
b) express V in terms of h when 2<h≤3

With notations in the figure above.

(a) When 0 ≤ h ≤ 2.

By similar triangles, h/w = 2/50 = 1/25.

That is, w = 25h

V = (h × w) ÷ 2 × 24
 = (h)(25h)(12)
 = 300h²


(b) When 2 < h ≤ 3.

V = (2 × 50) ÷ 2 × 24 + (h - 2) × 50 × 24
 = 1200 + (h - 2) × 1200
 = 1200 + 1200h - 2400
 = 1200h - 1200
