You never NEED to tip anywhere.Even though Montreal likes to brand itself as being more European than the rest of Canada tipping is still customary unlike in Europe.

Not just in Montreal sport, but all over Canada.

Unlike some areas in Europe, tipping is indeed common in Canada. That includes cities in the province of Quebec, like Montreal. You would typically offer a tip for good service in restaurants, for valet parking, coat checks, taxi rides, at bars, to the pizza delivery man, and at a barbershop.

We also offer a bonus (like a tip) once a year or on special occasions for the mailman, the paper boy, and any other regular home delivery service. If you stay in a hotel, it is common to leave a little something for the housekeeping staff, usually a few dollars per night stay.

Tipping is NOT mandatory, but it has become expected by many, especially restaurant staff. This is because their salaries are at a lower minimum wage, and the government taxes them on anticipated tips whether they receive them or not.

In Montreal, with combined federal and provincial taxes being close to 15% on your bill, you would generally leave a tip for good service equal to the taxes. Then you can vary that amount based on whether service was better or worse than expected.

One thing important to keep in mind...in Montreal if you see "TPS" on your bill, that does not stand for "tips". It is "Taux des Produits et Services", the French name for the "Goods and Services Tax". The other tax is "Taux de Valeur du Quebec" (TVQ) which is the provincial sales tax.
