English grammar
"Was called" is similar in meaning to "was known as" or "was formerly known as".
Examples:
Beijing was called Beiping when the Republic of China was formed in 1911.
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China was formerly known as British Hong Kong.

"Called" is similar in meaning to "formerly known as".
Examples:
Bejing, called Beiping in the era of the Republic of China, is the name of the Chinese capital now;
Hong Kong SAR, formerly known as British Hong Kong, is one of the two Special Administrative RegionsAdministrative Regions of the People's Republic of China under the principle of "one country, two systems".

It was called A a hundred of years ago,但這不表示那東西現在一定改了名,它現在仍然可以叫 A ,亦可以已經改了名。
