English grammar
"Was called" is similar in meaning to "was known as" or "was formerly known as".
Examples:
Beijing was called Beiping when the Republic of China was formed in 1911.
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China was formerly known as British Hong Kong.

Examples:

這個真的要看語境啦。

例如，某東西一百年前被稱作 A，你會說 It was called A a hundred of years ago，但這不表示那東西現在一定改了名，它現在仍然可以叫 A ，亦可以已經改了名。

因此大致來說，was called 跟那東西有沒有改名是沒有必然關係，它只是表達了那東西當時被稱作 A 的行為，所以可以 = / ≠ formerly known as。

不過如果改了名，那麼兩者都是差不多，可以互用，但記住之後要寫清楚它現在叫什麼，以免讀者有所誤會哦。
