i want to buy a new item and return the old same exact item with the receipt that i get from the new one can i get in trouble for doing that?

i have a item that i bought 2 months ago and it is having problems and i cant return it for a new one because the 30 day return policy has passed. so i want to buy the same exact item and return the old item for a refund with the receipt i get from the new one can i do that ? or is it against the law ?
