Upgrading my pc... or not?

Alright now i have a HP pavillion. Now the specs: 3 gigabyte RAM 64 bit OS 2.80 GHZ dual core can't remember the graphics card but it is fast enough to play skyrim on medeum graphics (if that says anything) and windows vista which i know i need to change. I'm not to tech savvy but i am tying to learn. Now i am asking if i can, or should upgrade the pc to a gaming one or just start over. I know i will change the OS and add a hard drive (as the current one is nearly full). I have the original case and i am looking at better ones. Also i am not looking for an instant upgrade, i am planning on doing this over time. As i get money i will gradually upgrade and have it finished in a couple years.

Don't waste your money. SAVE it until you can buy whatever is current when you have it all.
Computers in the last few years aren't worth the trouble and expense. That is unless you want to be stuck with olde games.
Upgrading individual pieces leads to mediocre game settings.
Generally most computers only fail at the Video Graphics Card because that is the most expensive, yet necessary part.
RAM, Hard drives, even the CPU are in most new machines, but the Manufacturers 'cheat' by putting in the cheapest VGC (usually motherboard mounted) they can get to keep the price down. Look for the dedicated memory on the VGC.

If you go for the upgrade make it the Video Graphics Card with lots (one gigabyte) of dedicated memory.
