1. A computer company develops a new scan disk. The cost $P of producing a scan disk is partly constant and partly varies inversely as the total number of scan disks N produced. When 2500 scan disks are produced, the total cost is $225 000. When 5000 scan disks are produced, the total cost is $425 000.
(a) Find the cost of producing a scan disk if 2500 scan disks are produced.
(b) Express P in terms of N.
(c) If the selling price of a scan disk is $120, find the profit percentage if the company products and sells 1000 scan disks.
(Give the answer correct to 3 significant figures.)
(d) If the selling price of a scan disk is $100, what is the minimum number of disks that need to be produced in order to make a profit?

2. The school soccer team organizes a soccer training camp. The school subsidizes two-thirds of the total expenses and the team members share the remaining expenses. The total expense $E for the camp is partly constant and partly varies directly as the number of team members N joining the camp.
If 15 members join the camp, the school has to pay $2400.
If 20 members join the camp, the school has to pay $3000.
(a) What is the total expense if 20 members join the camp?
(b) Express E in terms of N.
(c) If 30 members join the camp, how much should each member pay?
(d) If each members pays $72, how many members joined the camp?

(1)
P = a + b/N
225000/2500 = 90 = a + b/2500 ........... (1)
425000/5000 = 85 = a + b/5000 ............(2)
(1) - (2)
5 = b(1/2500 - 1/5000) = b/5000
b = 25000
so a = 90 - 25000/2500 = 80
(a) P for 2500 disks is $225,000/2500 = $90
(b) P = 80 + 25000/N
(c) P for 1000 disks = 80 + 25000/1000 = 80 + 25 = $105
Profit % = (120 - 105)/105 x 100% = 14.3%.
(d) Put P = 100,
100 = 80 + 25000/N
N = 25000/20 = 1250 = min. quantity of disks to produce to make a profit if selling price is $100.

(2) E = a + bN.
When N = 15, E = (3/2)(2400) = 3600
3600 = a + 15b ........(1)
When N = 20, E = (3/2)(3000) = 4500
4500 = a + 20b ........(2)
(2) - (1)
900 = 5b, b = 180, a = 900
(a) Total expense for 20 members = (3/2)(3000) = $4500.
(b) E = 900 + 180N

2014-03-30 08:08:37 補充:
(c) For N = 30, E = 6300, each member to pay = 6300 x 1/3 x 1/30 = $70.
(d) Amount from N members = 72N = E/3, so E = 216N
so 216N = 900 + 180N, N = 25.
