Thank is mainly used in the expressions “thank you” and “thanks”.

THANK (transitive verb)
If you thank someone, you express gratitude for something they have done or something they have given you.

Format: Thank someone for something.
He thanked me for what I had done.

Format: Thank someone for doing something.
He thanks his classmates for attending the wedding.
(thanks is a verb in this case)

THANKS (noun)
It is always used in plural form. (thank + s)
How can I ever express my thanks to you for what you have done?

THANKS (interjection)
No thanks!
Thanks very much.
Thanks for asking.

Thank you very much.
In this case, “thank” is used as a transitive verb. It needs an object.

Thank you has inevitably produced a number of equivalent phrases showing varying degrees of formality and emphasis.
In various circumstances, it is lengthened to thank you so much or thank you very much, sometimes with additional of “indeed” for good measure. Thanks is a shade less cordial than thank you, so. “Many”, “a lot”, and “a thousand“ are frequent elaboration of it.
