are growth rings visible in woody roots as well as in woody stems? Please explain?

I would have not thought so but the answer is YES but it seems to be in temperate parts of the world that the roots swell and expand and grow above the ground and if you were to cut one off and look at the cross section....you would most likely to see growth rings.
